Yes, I am very interested by the entry of CCTV and state-related actors entering the field. Their involvement will no doubt bring changes on many levels.

Great post indeed! As much as I would like video sites to succeed, I think the regulatory risk in China makes it very tough to consider an IPO. As for acquisitions, the Google affair (in addition to YouTube being blocked) is surely going to discourage any potential foreign buyer. Will local companies burden their balance sheets buying before video demonstrates ability to break-even? Why Shanda bought Ku6 is still pretty unclear to me... time will tell, I suppose.

On the revenue side, the point you raise about inventory is very true: video usage (related to Internet user numbers and maturity) and inventory (content available) are likely growing faster than ad money, which means bandwidth cost go up while revenue per vue is likely stable at best. Will the curves cross in the near future?

Thanks. I think you are right. The independents may be left fighting for crumbs. Another issue for them is how the investors exit. Do you think the government will allow a foreign firm to buy a major online video provider in China? I don't think so. And the Chinese firms, with the exception of Focus Media when their stock was flying high, tend to buy at distress sale prices if they buy at all. Maybe they can list overseas, but if so more likely in Singapore or on AIM than on Nasdaq.

Superb post. If this Youdu or Tukoo deal happens, I wonder if it will be enough to save the privately-owned standalone video sector? Leaving aside content costs (which they appear to be solving), bandwidth will still be expensive, they have way too much advertising inventory, and NTES and SOHU (not to mention BIDU, CCTV and SMEG) can slowly squeeze the independents out of business. And that's without even touching the question of whether SARFT will suffer these guys to live once they start draining revenues from the National Team.
